Does Online Therapy Work?
Short answer? Yes — for many people, online therapy works just as well as in-person therapy. But like most things related to mental health, the fuller answer is: it depends on your needs, your preferences, and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. Let’s break it down.

What Does the Research Say?
Multiple studies over the past decade have found that online therapy (also called telehealth or virtual therapy) is just as effective as in-person therapy for:
Anxiety
Depression
Trauma-related symptoms
Stress and burnout
Relationship concerns
Life transitions
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and many other evidence-based approaches translate very well to a virtual setting.
For many clients, the outcomes are comparable — and sometimes even better — because of increased consistency and comfort.
Why Online Therapy Works
Here are a few reasons online therapy can be highly effective:
1. You’re in Your Own Environment
When you’re sitting in your own home, you’re often more relaxed. That can make it easier to open up, be vulnerable, and talk about difficult things.
For some people, walking into an office feels intimidating. Logging into a session from your couch can lower that barrier.
2. Consistency Is Easier
When you don’t have to drive across town, arrange childcare, or take extra time off work, you’re more likely to attend consistently. And consistency is one of the biggest predictors of progress in therapy.
3. Real-Life Integration
Sometimes it’s helpful to process things in the same environment where they’re happening. For example:
Parenting stress while you’re actually at home with your kids
Relationship tension in your shared space
Work stress from your home office
We can work with what’s present in real time.
When Online Therapy Might Not Be the Best Fit
Online therapy is not perfect for every situation.
It may not be ideal if:
You don’t have a private space to talk
Your internet connection is unreliable
You prefer face-to-face energy and physical presence
You are experiencing a crisis that requires immediate in-person support
For some people, sitting in the same room as their therapist feels grounding in a way that a screen doesn’t, which is why I offer a limited number of in-person sessions as well. Sometimes, a hybrid set up of in-person and virtual sessions is what works perfectly.
Therapy is about fit - so it's good to tailor your therapeutic experience to your own unique needs.
Common Concerns About Online Therapy
“Will it feel awkward?”
Maybe at first — just like starting therapy in person can feel awkward at first. Most clients adjust within a session or two.
“Will my therapist really connect with me?”
Connection doesn’t depend on physical proximity. It depends on attunement, presence, and skill. A strong therapeutic relationship can absolutely develop online - and I have clients for whom this modality has worked for long-term care.
“Is it confidential?”
Yes. Licensed therapists use secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms designed specifically for protecting your privacy.
The Bigger Question: Does Therapy Work?
Online or in-person, therapy works best when:
You feel safe with your therapist
You’re willing to be honest (even when it’s uncomfortable)
You show up consistently
You’re open to reflection and growth
The format matters much less than the relationship and the work you’re willing to do.
So… Does Online Therapy Work?
For many people — yes.
For some people — even better than in-person.
For others — in-person may feel like a better fit.
The most important thing isn’t whether therapy happens in an office or on a screen.
It’s whether you start.
